it amazes me how dumb those cac armies were against the eastern tactics.

The Mongols were great at feigned retreats but they looked even more unstoppable because of cac arrogance.

basically the european army and mongols would open up the battle normally (both lines charge at each other), then after a while the Mongols would turn and “retreat”. Once the cacs saw the Mongols turn and run they would chase after them.

This was done so the European battle formation would be loosened up and cac soldiers would be scattered running after their enemies in heavy armor . Then the Mongols would turn around and slaughter the cacs.

This was done time after time.

Tbf to most armies of the period they were used to fighting horse raiders who would usually flee if you put a large force in the field, difference was the Mongols would be running plays and formations using flags and drums as signals. So you think you’re gonna have an easy day stealing what the raiders stole when suddenly the Khan hits you with “22 Y banana” Not to mention hitting you with smoke bombs and fire crackers. Your average peasant ain’t sticking around for that.
