Sixteen and 17-year-olds would be able to vote at the next general election, under government plans to lower the voting age.
The pledge is part of a raft of measures being introduced through a new Elections Bill.
Other changes include expanding forms of voter ID to include UK-issued bank cards, moving towards automatic voter registration and tightening rules on political donations to protect against foreign interference. The minimum voting age is already 16 for local council elections in Scotland and Wales, and elections to the Senedd and Scottish Parliament. However for other elections, including to the UK Parliament, local elections in England and all elections in Northern Ireland, it is 18.
Lowering the voting age to 16 across the UK would be the biggest change to the electorate since it was reduced from 21 to 18 in 1969.

Might be interesting to see the international ramifications of this. If it's a success for the UK, could other countries follow suit? :jbhmm:

It’s needed. If you’re old enough to work and get taxed, you’re old enough to vote.

If the voting age was 16 back in 2010/2011, the landscape of British politics would look completely different now because the biggest policies young voters cared about was the raising of university tuition fees.

Lowering the voting age to 16 adds about 10m more people to the voting pool and that most likely would have resulted in the Lib Dems winning the election instead and the need for a coalition government wouldn’t have existed.

The UK has shown on multiple occasions since 2008 that older voters have a habit of voting against the interest of the country due to racism (Brexit) or protecting their own assets (voting for Tory). These dinosaurs need to be drowned out in the voting pool.
