Colombia’s Vice President Marquez Begins Africa Tour
.
Colombia’s Vice President Francia Marquez departed Tuesday for a weeklong tour of four countries in Africa, aimed at deepening diplomatic and commercial ties and advancing a biregional partnership between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the African Union.
Marquez’s itinerary runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1 and includes stops in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Nigeria. She will be accompanied by officials from the foreign, commerce, agriculture, and environment ministries, as well as representatives from the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), the national health regulator Invima, the presidential cooperation agency (APC), Aeronautica Civil, ProColombia, and the Fondo Mujer Libre y Productiva.
The vice presidency said the mission, which will be Marquez’s third to Africa under the current administration, is part of a government strategy of “reconnection” with the continent to expand relations in areas including diplomacy, trade, education, culture, investment, production, and security. Colombian officials said they expect to pursue new commercial and cultural agreements and to promote exports and investment in sectors such as coffee, cacao, food products, pharmaceuticals, clean energy, and goods of ethnic origin.
Colombia will also explore mechanisms to work with the African Continental Free Trade Area, which has been described by Colombian officials as the world’s largest free-trade zone, and to promote a strategic biregional agenda between CELAC and the African Union. Colombia holds the pro tempore presidency of CELAC, a role officials say reinforces the government’s interest in expanding South-South cooperation.
Marquez is scheduled to begin the tour in Ethiopia, travel on to Mozambique and Madagascar, and conclude in Nigeria before returning to Bogota on Sept. 1. The delegation’s program includes bilateral meetings with government counterparts, promotion of investment opportunities, and discussions on cooperation in agriculture, connectivity, and cultural exchange
