Walgreens is struggling to deter shoplifting at its stores, according to CEO Tim Wentworth, who described it as "a hand-to-hand combat battle still, unfortunately."

Wentworth spoke to analysts during a first-quarter earnings call on Friday, Business Insider reported. He said the Illinois-based retailer is taking "creative" steps to address the issue.

"When you lock things up, for example, you don't sell as many of them," BI reported. "We've kind of proven that pretty conclusively."

I can see that. When you have to go find an employee to unlock everything it gets tedious AF afterwhile. It's worse in big stores like Walmart where you have to wait for someone to walk all the way across the store to unlock some deodorant :beli:

I have opted against making a purchase quite a few times simply because the stuff was locked up and i didn't feel like waiting for assistance.

Convenience is a major factor for consumers. Nobody trying to be inconvenienced at a convenience store.

It’s getting real hard for retail businesses especially in high theft areas

U can hire real security who actually cares

Better packaging where shyt got to get unlocked at the cash register for high price items

But hell Walgreens and cvs are closing stores this year

I buy my deodorant in bulk at Sam's or Costco. If not, I get it at Harris Teeter, a store that doesn't lock shyt up. If those don't work, then I'll order it from Amazon and get it in a day. I refuse to entertain stores locking up shyt. It looks tacky and unprofessional, you're basically broadcasting to the world that you're a low class establishment. Hire more people to watch out for shoplifters if you have an inventory problem. :camby:

This is the last thing we need

These theft eventually hurt low-income communities because some will shut down and people will have to travel long distances for basic necessities.

Looking out for the community includes making sure criminal activity doesn't impact everyone who has nothing to do with it.

Is Tim Wentworth related to J.D.? :patrice:

And man, nobody wanna buy stuff that’s locked up. Here in the DMV you can go to bodegas and the whole store behind plexiglass. You gotta tell the cashier all the items you want, god-forbid you need something real specific. I purposely don’t shop in stores like that. I mean, why even be in the neighborhood if you THAT scared of the people?

I wanna touch the stuff I plan on purchasing. Some of the grocery stores here do that too! Can’t get no laundry detergent or soap without some assistance. But go to certain areas and nothing is behind glass. Eff all that, I get trying to stop theft but it’s messing up my shopping experience
