Basically they will call each company for the dates, they will email you back saying the have discrepancies in your dates, so they will ask you to send in Pay-stubs or W2
Your W-2 information will not add up,,, better say you was on sick leave or something

I've done that a million times before, you'll be fine. Depends on when you left the job though, if it was a long time ago or if the job isn't relevant to the position you applied for then in my experience they won't even call them to verify you worked there.
I passed background checks by listing google voice numbers for former employers and talking to them myself
If it's just a year or two, you could probably feign ignorance/typo/not remembering. Is it an established company or a smaller business?

ok so it's usually 7 years BG check- AT&T and prob gov't 10 years
and it depends on the felony or misdemeanor charge
Assault and theft are automatically no-gos.
