Was 50 cent really the reason jay z retired in 2003? And didn't come back until 2006?

Man Jay left because it was a publicity stunt....when someone big announces "final album," it builds hype for sales....that's all...

THen you come back and drop "anticipated return" but unfortunately that was the turd called Kingdom Come :scusthov:

Other artists have done it

Doubt it. I don't see how dropping projects whilst 50 was around would ruin his career, Nas did it and outlived 50.

Nah, it was a crappy publicity stunt.

Though 50 did have jay running around making a mixtape around that time.

He should've retired in 98 when Dmx came through or 99 when Eminem came through or 2000 when Nelly came through or really last year when Kendrick came through.

Young,

I'm not mentally attached to the tide or a friend of his, so I can't tell you why he retired as certain cats in this threads are trying to do.
But my best guess would be that he actually thought he could retire and if he couldn't he had a well anticipated comeback to fall back on.
Probably got anxious about his legacy outside of hiphop, let's be honest his legacy outside of hiphop was basically defined from 2006 to present, while his hiphop legacy is mostly 96-03.

Never thought about it that way, but I mean Jay stayed around when Eminem blew up....so I dont see why Curtis would scare him away.

then again I guess 50 was from NY, and the KONY title would be a kinda awkward topic

Jay was dropping albums every year from 96 to 03, dude probably was tired and needed a break..

At certain times during that time period he was dropping albums months apart, not even waiting a year between albums :whew:

the real hiphop.
I think 50 blowin up so huge as he did in 03 was part of the reason. He probably doubted himself and his capability to be the torchbearer of hiphop.

This brings me to the next point, his bruised ego and confidence. The Nas battle didn't turn out to be the overwhelming victory he expected it to be. A lot of people felt he lost that battle, and regardless of his own conviction that he had won, that must have hurt him. Add also the fact that he had just dropped BP2, which was considered weak and underwhelming.

The third reason is spelled Damon Dash. I find it very possible Jay was already planning on how to dissolve the Roc and distance himself from Dame and Biggs. Perhaps this "retirement" was part of that plan, on some "Im a pretend to quit rap when really Im just gonna quit fukkin wit you". We seen the footage from Choke No Joke how Dame was already distanced from what Jay was doin and uninformed about the marketing plans for the Black Album.
