Was the NWO the ones who made it cool to cheer the heels?

everyone will have a different answer depending on which era they grew up watching and there really isn't a "wrong" answer to this, but one thing is for sure ...the NWO was a more popular faction than DX was no matter how much WWE has tried to re-write history and tell us otherwise over the years. it's not up for debate either. the NWO had a massive impact on not only the wrestling industry, but pop culture in general.

DX had some moments as well, but at the end of the day they were nothing more than a "Great Value" version of the NWO.

This. I was never a fan on the heel til red/black NWO with Kevin Nash and Sting but it really depends on who the face is.

While you can find a plenty examples before outside of WWE such as Horseman, Flair etc, I would say Survivor Series 96 Sid entrance was the first time or at least first time on a grand stage, you had a straight up non-cool Heel cheered, mostly based on a backlash or hate for the babyface being shoved down their throat.

I would also say the WM20 match with Brock and Goldberg was probably the beginning of crowds taking over a show and doing chants and making it about themselves. I'm not saying this was the first match with chants but I remember the crowd being super pissed outside of a kayfabe level and being mad about both of them leaving after the match and completely sh*tting on it.

interestingly enough, both happened at MSG

It's always been a thing. Many of the biggest faces throughout wrestling turned face because they were so popular as heels. Go watch JCP studio shows and the Midnight Express always has a contingent of fans and the Horsemen would actually have dudes dressing up in suits to cheer for them each week :mjlol:
