It was diverse (although majority white), but people still segregated into their own groups and not just by race but by interests, backgrounds, etc. Then there were some people who just drifted from group to group. While a lot of people self-segregated there wasn't any tension or fighting. Everyone got along for the most part.

I don't think there's anything wrong with kids getting into their own groups. People often hang out with those they share the most in common with and sometimes that can be by race and especially culture. I was reading an article the other day where a woman said that she found it "distressing" that there were kids who were still segregating themselves by race (despite being in multicultural classrooms) and more needed to be done to encourage them to start hanging out with people of different races outside of class. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of forcing integration.

People hang out with who they naturally feel comfortable hanging out with. There will always be a middle ground between those who prefer being around different people and those who prefer being around their own. High schools are no exception.

My high school was mostly black and Hispanic. People seperated by interest but that was mostly correlated by ethnicity.

my high school was.

the white kids(mostly albanians n italians) could be found on the 1st floor because they used the parking lot entrance(the only teenagers with cars in my high school were the whites and a few dominicans).

the artsy fartsy kids liked the 2nd floor because thats where the auditorium and art classes were.

the black kids hung out a lot on the 3rd floor for some reason, i never knew why that was.

4th floor was where the main entrance and school administration was at so nobody hung out there

it was well known most of the dominicans and other latinos hung out on the 5th floor because thats where the ESL classes were held.

the nerdy types that loved school were mostly on the 6th where all the science and engineering labs were at

the weird gothic kids liked the 7th floor because it wasnt as well lit as the other floors.

the future hipster yuppies(all races) could be found on the 8th floor where all the college level courses were.

the puerto ricans were pretty much everywhere.

everybody had class in every floor but in between classes the lines were clearly drawn.

the mexicans vs bloods beef of 1997 :wow:

the dominican vs albanian beef of 2000 :banderas:

fun times.
