Under normal circumstances, would write this off as Peter Vescey-level fishing for content, but I've been following the drive to rid colleges/high schools of offensive names/mascots. As recently as a month ago, the Sec. of Education defending their use.

They’re not forcing many of these college teams with Native American names to change.

The Chicago Blackhawks aren’t getting squeezed to become the Chicago Commanders or whatever in the NHL.

I suppose if there’s a great offense taken by the term Redskins, that’s fair. But couldn’t they change the name but keep the Native American theme of the franchise?

I don’t think it’s a hill worth dying on. If they want to keep the Commanders, whatever. But if that’s the case they ought to apply pressure across the board with these Indian names/mascots/logos.

Commanders grew on me, wouldn’t mind them going back to Redskins though. The brain just naturally goes back to Redskins or “Skins”, they have too much history.

Guardians is so wack to me, they couldn’t pick a better name?

Indians is such a weird name, like crackers sailed the wrong way and thought they were in India and therefore called the natives Indians. Then when people realized that it wasn't Indians, they just like, fukk your ancestry we'll keep on calling you Indians

Redskin is just foul, like calling a team the harder ERs.


While Blackhawks, I don't see a problem there. It's almost like the Vikings, he's a Chicago legend

I went to the University of Illinois where this was the mascot, Chief Illiniwek.

The Illiniwek tribe and other Native American groups fought this for years, eventually the NCAA stepped in and in 2005 told U of I and like 18 other schools they needed to get rid of the mascot/name or they wouldn't be able to be involved in NCAA shyt.
