DARPA has released footage of a successful test of a new "smart bullet" that can change direction in midair.

Teledyne Scientific and Imaging's Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program, which is being developed with funding from DARPA, has developed a self-steering bullet. Intended for long-distance shots, the EXACTO bullet is able to change course in order to strike moving targets.

“This live-fire demonstration from a standard rifle showed that EXACTO is able to hit moving and evading targets with extreme accuracy at sniper ranges unachievable with traditional rounds," wrote Jerome Dunn, a DARPA program manager. "Fitting EXACTO’s guidance capabilities into a small .50-caliber size is a major breakthrough and opens the door to what could be possible in future guided projectiles across all calibers.”

DARPA has released a video of the EXACTO program in action. The video shows seven shots by an experienced marksman, followed by a single shot from a first-time shooter.

The Department’s Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) is a .50 caliber bullet that maneuvers itself as it travels through the air. It’s far from clear how it works—“the system combines a maneuverable bullet and a real-time guidance system to track and deliver the projectile to the target,” says DARPA—but it’s now effective enough to swerve and dive to hit a moving target.

In a video released by DARPA, a trained sniper uses the system to reliably hit a target that starts moving once the shot is taken. But, unnervingly, it also manages to hit the spot when an untrained user of the sniper rifle takes a shot.

Seriously, I doubt it.
It's a lead blob that spins as it exits the barrel, what's going to make it turn? Whatever is making it turn probably won't fit in a .223 caliber or 9mm round.
And what's to say that the sniper shot ahead of the moving target so that it would hit on impact? You know, like throwing a football to a moving receiving.

Take the headshot in the vest and keep running :win:

a .50 caliber will probably blow half of your body away when it hits center mass.....no way you will want to survive that hitting any part of your body.
