Tonight is the Grammys. Though this would be a good time to post this in anticipation of lots of complaining and controversy and frustration and begging to be accepted and whining.
As long as we (BLACK PEOPLE) continue to seek validation from those who see us as second class at best and sub-human at worst, we will never really progress. Don't tie your value into receiving the approval of people who don't think much of you. This include awards.
We shouldn't even care about the Oscars and Grammys - award ceremonies that existed before segregation even ended and is run by people who don't relate to, care about, or celebrate our contributions. **** the Oscars and **** the Grammy's. Stop giving "master" power. Did you forget that the Grammy's used to give out their hip hop awards during pre-shows and commercial breaks? That's the kind of respect our art - an art that has influenced practically every genre playing on the radio today - gets. Yet many black people make fun of Nas - arguably the best rapper to ever walk this earth - for not having a Grammy. As if all the great work Nas has done is less incredible - if not completely nullified - because some committee filled with down low racists and ignorant fools who know nothing about hip hop didn't think he was good enough. The same committee that gave Grammy's to Ludacris and Lil Wayne but not Lupe Fiasco…the same one that gave the best hip hop album award to Macklemore over Kendrick Lamar......right.
Our own awards. Our own ceremonies. Our own support. Our own love. Our own Hollywood. It's the only way. Highlight the ridiculousness of the Oscar and Grammy nominations to support the fact that we need to build our own things, not to complain and beg for fair treatment and acceptance. Please stop. THE SYSTEM THAT OPPRESSES US WITH ITS RIGHT HAND ISN’T GOING TO UPLIFT US WITH ITS LEFT. IT MAKES NO SENSE. STOP BEGGING PEOPLE TO LOVE US. It didn't work before, it won't work now, and it will never work in the future. More on this later, but if you choose to watch the Oscars or Grammys, treat it as entertainment and nothing more. They don’t matter as long as you don’t allow them to.
