was wondering if anyone on the coli was into weird/outsider music. music that is "off" either in a socially unacceptable way, and/or in a idiot savant kind of way

stuff like:
- captain beefheart
- wesley willis
- moondog
- rashaan roland kirk
- ol dirty b*stard (yes he counts, absolutely)
- devo (basement tapes, pre-fame)
- jandek
- lil ugly mane
- eric dolphy
- jan terri
- the shaggs

i could list more and more, but i think that gives a general idea. a lot of this music is absolutely horrible, but its interesting in some ways.

wesley willis was a black man in chicago. he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. he didnt always take his medicine. he had a very bad childhood and was left to fend for himself on the streets of chicago. he started busking and playing his original songs, based on keyboard presets. pretty much every song is the same, but extremely profane and off the wall. wesley said writing those songs was cathartic for him, and helped him escape his many 'hellrides' - freakouts on the city bus. he was an incredible visual artist. ill link some of his drawings. he died in 2003 i believe. the indie rock community sort of took him in, and producer steve albini produced an album with a rock band founded by wesley and some of his friends.

i think most people like wesley because they like to laugh at him. i think thats really sad. the man was tortured and frequently couldnt get or wouldnt take his medicine. his music is definitely silly at times but that was his way. that documentary is powerful. rip wesley
