Were my parents stupid for this ? (Chicago Edition)

i lived in Chicago until i was 14

when i was 12 i went to lincoln park elementary school as part of the pre IB program. I made a lot of friends there and did a lot of after school sports

the problem is i didn’t live anywhere close to the school. it’s by downtown in Lincoln park and at that time my family lived in the north west side in Belmont Cragin

i had no ride after school if i stayed for sports, so my parents got me a cta bus card and i took the Fullerton bus to Cicero and then walked home

was that stupid of my parents letting their 12 year old son take public transportation home ?

i never thought about it until i was older, i didn’t have a cell phone either

i wasn’t ungrateful, i actually enjoyed it. i just don’t think i would do that for my kid, especially if i had no way to contact them

one time i fell asleep on the bus and missed my stop, it was night time outside and i got off and crossed the street.

I was crying not knowing what to do while walking back to my original stop


thankfully i had another buss-pass in my pocket

And a lot of kids took it to get to school but it was a “different” era in a sense where we didn’t know mfs were as messed up in the head like we do now because crime and nonsense was way more prevalent then than it is now. Just being aware and constantly reminded about the mass fukkkery that exists now makes a huge difference in mindsets.

I thought about this with my son, when the time comes I’d let him but he’s have to be with other kids and be deviced up. Idk though, things change with time so we’ll see

I was 11 taking the Metro from Silver Spring to NW DC in 1992. And I'm pretty sure tons of kids had to public transportation everywhere if they grew up in NY.

You called yoru parents stupid for making a logical decision that they probably gave you the money to do.

it’s definitely different compared to today

i technically didn’t have to take the cta but then i couldn’t do anything after school.

so i would be coming home around rush hour and the fullerton was super packed

entire fam is from Chicago…public transpo is simply a part of the city’s culture…

both my parents were takin the bus and the L when they were kids to get to school and around the city in the 70s…

shyt is probably safer today since you can actually contact your kids…back then you just had to hope they made it wherever they were going…

I know Newark and Jersey City don't have school busses (at least when I was little) so all the kids get discounted bus passes. We all lived that unsupervised latch key life. I was walking home from school in the 1st grade. Would I let my son do that now? Hell to the naw.

I started taking the Bus and T at 12. Back then it was no issue.

12 year olds are usually in 7th grade, more than old enough to go to and from school on their own, depending on their level of responsibility. Strange thing to invite a bunch of strangers to call your parents stupid over though

especially when you only took 1 bus

I used to take the Blue Line to Cicero to visit my family all the time when I was a shorty
