It's funny we spend so much time talking about emcees and how they've lead the decline of hip hop but we don't talk about how djing helped lead hip hop to prominence and now has been sidetracked.
DJ KOOL HERC created this artform and many of yall prolly don't know anything about the man. He created the "break" which formulated beats and that lead to producers eventually sampling which is in the same vein.
Cats like DJ Red Alert, Mr. Magic, Jam Master J, DJ RUN, etc. helped provide prominence back in the day.
Then during the 80's cats like Jazzy Jeff literally transformed the scene with skills.
Other cats were ill and took this blueprint and ran with it. DJ Scratch, Terminator X.
After that, a new era (the late 80's/early 90's) reined in...the Mixtape DJ.
Busy B, Kid Capri, Doo Wop, reached out to hip hop artists to showcase their talents. Then Ron G and Clue took it a step further creating "blends"
i'm a stop here cuz there's a lot to digest.
