I got an MBA from a top 5 school a few years ago but honestly most of that shyt was boring to me. I’m now in a position where I have to do a lot of financial modeling and big picture business thinking. I can do my job decently but I’m severely limited by the fact that I don’t care much about the subject matter. My peers and competition live and breathe this stuff and I’m not tryna be left behind or miss out on this money.

So what are some entertaining books to read, movies to watch, podcasts to listen to that will help with big picture business thinking? I’m a creative person at heart so I figure a non-traditional approach might help this subject matter “stick”

Maaan, I’m trying to apply for an M7 school in the next year or two. Wharton is my dream school but I’ll do some select schools in the T15 (Yale, Tuck) and top schools in The Consortium.

But to answer your question, here are all the sites and media I use to keep abreast with the general business environment, but domestically and internationally.

For Podcasts I like
-The Economist Money Talks
-Behind the Money by The FT (probably my favourite, but they haven’t released a pod in a while)
-HBR Ideacast (more so geared to management)
-How I built this by NPR (more so entrepreneurship focused)

Video Channels
-CNBC International / CNBC Explains
-Bloomberg Quick-take

Readings / Websites
-Havard Business Review
-The Economist (The Business section)
-WSJ (Business and Finance section)
-The Financial Times
-PYMTS (Digital Payments and Fintech focused)
-Tech Cabal (African focused Tech site)

Once you start going through all these mediums, you’ll start seeing the same stories and noticing some patterns amongst them. I think from there, it’ll help flesh out the big picture if you have a general grasp of the industry/market.

Hope this helps and lemme know if you got any other Qs.

When I started to learn business, I used to read old HBR article. My dad had a The Economist subscription. Whenever I picked his copies, I will go straight to business section. For each article page that I found usefull, I make a copy an keep it in a folder, read the magazine and toss it to the bin. Every year I revisit some of the articles. this process built my knowlegde.

best of luck with the MBA breh. I went to Kellogg, graduated 6 years ago. I just saw that Stanford is part of the consortium now. If you can get a fellowship thru the Consortium it’s a good look. Being loan free would be :blessed:
