My wife's family is from San Diego so we visit often.

My honest opinion is they do Italian and Mexican better than any other city. Been to plenty restaurants of each, don't know the names off top but haven't missed when showing up at a random one. Can't even check yelp because all the Italian spots are reviewed with a 4+ star rating so it's hard to filter what I've been to.
Phil's BBQ definitely
Santana's and Sombrero's (Carne Asada Fries, California Burrito, etc.)
Shotcaller Street Soul Food
Tandoori Hut and Taste of Himalayas
Hash House (for breakfast)
Soul & Surf
The Melt
Burger Lounge

Man, there's an upscale rooftop spot I been to once in downtown for brunch (American food) that was poppin (long-ass line/wait times).
It was out in the open and right in the middle of the taller buildings. I want to say it was down the street of Petco Park stadium where the Padres play at.
Can't remember the name, it was :wow: though.
Edit: looking at pictures it may have been The Nolen, but not 100% as this was a few years ago.

Bronx Pizza is really good if you like the NYC style

Broken Yolk Cafe is garbage, don't waste your time.

Alot of different types of food available, have fun!
