For investing I recommend pulling books off the library shelves. What speaks to some people may not speak to you. I never got anything out of Suze Orman. Some books only teach you one concept but it can be a life changer. Also become debt free and live simply.

Debt-Proof Living-Mary Hunt
The Total Money Makeover- Dave Ramsey (Listen to his radio show too. It is repetitive but interesting to hear the problems people get into.)

One Up On Wall Street- Peter Lynch (If you want to make a killing on the stock market, you have to get lucky and take a risk on one or two stocks.)
The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need- Andrew Tobias (Skip to the back and learn about the recommended mutual families).
Ibbotson: Stocks, Bonds, Bills, and Inflation- Morningstar (Tons of charts and graphs that show the annual results of the stock market and various asset classes since 1926. This knowledge will keep you from jumping out of a building in a down market.)
Cash Flow Quadrant- Robert Kiyosaki (Blew my mind when I realized a surgeon was just a day laborer.)
Any book by Eric Tyson who writes Dummies books.
Any book by Thomas J. Stanley who writes Millionaire books.

How To Retire Early And Live Well With Less Than A Million Dollars- Gillette Edmund

JK Lasser's Your Income Tax 2014 (Read it. Learn it. Know it.)

Purchase a business calculator and learn how to use the present value/future value function.

Knowing your rights isn't going to stop you from getting harassed. You may have to avoid a certain part of town or even acknowledge you may be at fault. Most important always have an emergency fund with several thousand dollars to pay for fines or legal representation. If you want to make a real change you have to get involved with community groups and politics.

The only black power book I have read is The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I read Roots too. I noticed that black men spend far too much energy on loser criminals or high school basketball players. Focus on people who actually accomplished something.

If you are a man with no particular interest in women or children, don't get married or have children. Seems self-explanatory but men repeatedly create families that they don't want. This behavior opposes "black power" and is legally and financially crippling.

Southside VA posted a complete guide to stocks and bonds. I re-posted it a couple times.

It gets very detailed and covers the fundamentals without the message getting lost in the author's philosophy or investment strategy.

It has been decades since I've read the book or seen the movie, however both were excellent, A+. I always read books first because a book has so much greater detail than a movie. In the book Malcolm talked about how blacks and whites treat money differently. He also admitted to turning out a girl who been properly raised. I think she wound up on drugs and prostituting. These were important to me but I can't remember if they were covered in the movie at all.

Nice thread, I appreciate the books listed for information on stocks and all that thanks

A good companion book to go with the autobiography of Malcom X is "Malcolm X: The Man and His Times - edited by : John Henrik Clarke"
