I've always liked 'Do you want more??!! It's the first album.

Things Fall Apart and Game Theory are my favorites. Do You Want More is dope if you're into more jazzy type beats. Regardless of what album you pick up, Black Thought is guaranteed to spit fire.

This. Add Illadelph Half-life, and those are the 4 essential albums that capture the Roots at their best--they're superlative work.

I'd personally listen to them in this order: Do you want more?!?!?!, How I got Over, Things Fall Apart, and then Illadelph Halflife. I wouldn't rank them like that, but I think that sequence will give you the best Roots vibe

The responses you're gonna get are all basically gonna be personal preference.

Illadelph is generally considered their best album, Things Fall Apart was their breakthrough album, and outside of The Tipping Point all of them have wide critical acclaim.

Can't really go wrong with any of them IMO. I'd start and just listen to them in order.

Piff on every album:

Even off-tracks here and there are awesome:

and this is the track that solidified Black Thought as a GOAT-quality emcee for me:

Go read my post. I would not recommend listening to anything out of those 4 I listed first. Game Theory, Phrenology, Rising Down, etc are cool, but they aren't The Roots at their finest, and you won't really get the proper impression that you would if you hear the four I listed first.

How I Got Over is a good way to beginning the journey, though

what makes the roots so interesting to me is that each of their albums represents a different era in hip hop imo. things fall apart was during the neo-soul era with the soulquarians (erykah badu, black star, common, d'angelo, j dilla, etc.) so if you like that sound you'll like that album. do you want more could easily be categorized as jazz rap along with stuff like guru's jazzmatazz.
