I'm currently a Junior Psych major at McNeese State. I've always had a calling to help others and wished to become a social worker, but the BSW programs in Louisiana are scarce.

The closet thing was Psychology with a minor in Family & Child Studies. Do you guys think this is a good choice to work in entry level child welfare and social services?

I have made a pseudo resume and have gotten plenty of calls for interviews.

A lot of people had told me beforehand that I wouldn't be able to get a lot of jobs, but it seems like that is not true.

I will pursue a MSW, but I'll need to work full time while doing this, so do you guys think that I'll be able to find a reasonable job ($19-$22 Hourly) with my Bachelors in Psychology and Minor in Family & Child Studies?

bls says there were 607k social worker jobs in 2012
median salary was $44,200 ($21.25/hr); 10th percentile $27,450; 90th percentile $72,980
another 114k jobs expected to be created by 2022

"A bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) is the most common requirement for entry-level positions. However, some employers may hire workers who have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as psychology or sociology."

i'd guess $19-22 is a little bit optimistic right out of the gate, but very attainable with a few years of experience

study the charts where they break down salary by industry

good luck! maybe an actual social worker will chime in??

Be broke unless you decide to put in your hours and become a psychologist.

Friend of mine started out as a psych for a rehab spot then became a psyche for the military and is now tryin to transition to a government agency.

It's great that you want to help people

If you have passion and drive and are interested to maybe after you get a bit of experience you'll do research and become a consultant on government childhood/education/development and health programmes possibly write a book (I'm money focused so always looking for a direction that leads to the most $$)

It's not about your degree though, it's about the passion you have for your subject area that will ultimately set you apart from the herd.
