What can NBA franchises learn from the San Antonio Spurs?

Even though they don't have the greatest number of championships, they are definitely the best franchise in the NBA of the last two decades.

How have they been able to win a championship in 1999 with Tim Duncan, as well as a championship in 2014 with Tim Duncan?

What can a franchise, like say the Toronto Raptors, learn from them?

I can kinda see some similarities between our growth and the Spurs

I'm loving that we are constantly making history with this franchise over the last 3 years or so and hopefully we can continue to do so

The difference is the lack of quality relative to San Antonio, an inferior coach and I don't like the way we play basketball, at least offensively.

So I like our growth process but a few kinks here and there need to be fixed before we can go on a similar journey.

Have a Hal of famer than tank and get another one in the draft

Than get that player to take less money his whole career
D Rob and Sean Elliot were both hurt in 97.
Hard to say they tanked.

shyt was just a crazy set of events that got them Duncan. They had the 3rd worst record and won the lottery.

THREAD OVER.
Tim Duncan was essentially a role player when they won a title in 2014 (I don't mean this in any disrespect. He just wasn't prime Duncan).

So what can teams do?

lol, of course...he was damn near 40. But he still made that last basket to clench.

And that's inconsequential anyway.

The fact remains that Tim Duncan is quite arguably the greatest college basketball prospect ever, and
every team wanted him since he was a sophomore at Wake Forest and he stayed all four years. There's
not gonna be too many players like him that come along, but when they do they alter the course of a franchise.

If the Spurs don't get the #1 overall pick in 1997, we prolly are never talking about them to this day.

How to spot and develop talent. That still can only get you so far if you don't hit the lottery with a guy like Duncan.

They were ahead of the curve on the Euros and got two hall of fame type players out of it and who have played forever.

Also, passing and moving without the ball. Plus lucking out on a lottery obviously.

Well the problem is the first thing you have to do is get Tim Duncan...and I don't just mean get a top 10 arguably greatest at his position ever...I mean a guy that talented with an ego that low that as he gets older and less effective you can get him to take a lesser role and less money...if you don't have that it won't last...you may be good for awhile and you might win a chip...but you won't be good for two decades and win 5 chips...

The crazy thing is that in the league today I only see one player who would do it...who is young enough to not even be in his prime...already a superstar player in the league...have a personality humble enough that you could see him taking less after his next max contract...and that's Kawhi Leonard so the Spurs have done the fukking impossible TWICE...

Also you got to treat your players well...when they had to trade Diaw for Pau as a salary dump they told Diaw to write down the teams he would want to be traded to and they wold try to make that happen...Utah was one of those teams because he is friends with Gobert...probably ever other team in the league trades Diaw for the best available player or pick they can get...Spurs traded him to a team he wanted for a player second round pick that is never going to play 1 second for them...

Need a culture like the spurs where everyone is invited to everyone else's meetings and can give their input on whatever...

Todays nba doesn't work like this...you won't EVER see another basketball team do what the Spurs do over a 20 year stretch...and what they are still doing now...
