The first pick in the 2024 NBA draft spent his 21st birthday glued to the Atlanta bench in the Hawks’ 122-116 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday, the first “DNP-coach’s decision” — or healthy scratch — of his career.

Risacher started the first two-thirds of the season but was removed from the starting group after a moribund 128-97 home loss to Miami dropped Atlanta to 27-31, with CJ McCollum taking his place. Since then, the Hawks have gone 18-4 and risen from the fringes of the playoff chase to the fifth position in the East. (Risacher did make one more start, in a game that All-Star forward Jalen Johnson missed).

When Risacher first went to the bench, the Hawks talked about continuing to get him minutes and progress his development. However, the Hawks’ emergence in the East playoff chase has complicated that objective. Risacher’s minutes also dwindled once newly acquired Jonathan Kuminga returned to full strength from a knee injury; with Kuminga overlapping positionally with Risacher, Atlanta rarely needs to turn to both.

That became apparent when Risacher played a career-low seven minutes in Monday’s loss to New York. After that game, Hawks coach Quin Snyder blamed circumstances rather than anything Risacher had done, and said the Hawks are tightening bench minutes because the current stretch is essentially Atlanta’s playoffs (Atlanta could have clinched a playoff spot with a win).

“I think if you look at what I’ve been talking about, with this being the playoffs, I think Zach’s been done all the things that I’ve talked about that we’ve asked,” said Snyder.

“We only have so many guys that we can actually put in the game, and in certain situations we’re playing Nickeil (Alexander-Walker) and Dyson (Daniels) and those guys more minutes, (so) people just get squeezed. JK (Kuminga) played a little more, so those minutes come from somewhere.”

“So, it’s not anything about one player. That’s just the game … I think we’re past the point where we’re looking at individual players trying to dissect whether they should be playing more or less.”

“The guys that are out there the majority of the time are the Dysons and Nickeils and JJs (Jalen Johnson), Zach gets caught in that. We need him to keep doing the things that he’s been doing. I mean, he’s great. He’s been crashing the glass. Those are big plays for us.”

On Wednesday, however, Snyder went a step further. With Corey Kispert inserted into the rotation ahead of Risacher, there were no minutes left.

With Atlanta’s last two opponents (Cleveland and New York) also being the Hawks’ most likely playoff foes, Risacher’s playing time situation doesn’t seem likely to change in the near future.

Hawks made win now off season moves. And it took half a season to click

He shoots 60% from the line and cant create his own shot

He'll get his pension but a sustained role in the league will be hard to come by

Hawks deserve grace given the development of JJ, NAW and Dyson, but I don't know what they thought was going to happen trading for Kuminga when they'd inevitably have to decide between playing the two. And while they're both role players at this stage of their respective careers, it seems an awful waste to just disregard their #1 pick like that all for someone who hasn't shown he's worthy enough to be prioritized over anyone.

Hawks would have to hope that the shine hasn't worn off completely with him as a trade piece because that's all he'll be to them.

I hate to put him in the same sentence as Bennett, but I remember Cleveland gave up on Bennett after a year but utilized his value or what was left of it effectively, trading him and Wiggins for Kevin Love. If Atlanta wants to make another move this summer, Giannis or otherwise, he's the guy who is a big part of the deal. Risacher/Pelicans pick is a must in any deal.

He has to go to a team at the beginning of their blowup

Was the #1 pick in a weak draft that didn't really have a #1 draft pick(Castle is probably going to end up being the most impactful player on that draft)

He's still very young and has improved. Plays decent enough defense and the offense is coming along. Hawks are actually trying to win games, his development ain't really a priority. He needs to go to like the Wizards or Nets.

I called this three weeks ago too in the Kuminga trade thread -
The funny thing about posters in here calling out Kerr/GS for giving up on Kuminga is -

The Hawks find themselves in a similar position.

Their #1 pick from last season [Risacher] has fallen out of favor and is now coming off the bench, and with Kuminga now in the rotation, they're both essentially fighting for the same role. ATL isn't going to be able to carry both of them for an extensive period of time, so at least one of them will be forced out and along the way at least one of them will inevitably get fed up with not having a greater role.

And with Jalen standing in Kuminga's way of being a starter, I don't see how this has the ideal ending for him, unless he finally embraces being a role player.

But who am I kidding, most of you posters in here will forget about Kuminga in a year's time just like when you said GS made a mistake letting go of Wiseman and Poole (and y'all forgot about both of them too).
