What exactly makes a player worthy of a max contract?

I think this is a fair question. Honestly it would be cool if someone reviewed all of the past max contracts and identified the characteristics of players where the contract paid off versus when it didn't. There must be an ideal age, position, statistics that suggest who should get the max and who should not. I'm not going to pretend that I know what that is. But the Wizards and everyone else should be afraid of giving somebody the max who hasn't yet proven that they are a perennial all-star-caliber player. It could work out but it's a gamble.

And what exactly makes them max players? Or what is the cut off of the max player realm?

Should only dudes like Steph and Bron, that caliber, be max players?

Players that have beein in the top 5 of any major category: Blocks, Rebounds, Assists etc

+

At least 1 all star selection

+ 1 all nba team




And players who have won an MVP award
