12 by far.

I do like that in X they force you to use the different skills from the characters, something missing in a lot of JRPGs nowadays.

The recent ones are fun but don't feel "Final Fantasy" enough for me.
I'll you what though, if Square takes notes from Expedition 33 and jacks elements from their battle system I'm not gonna be mad at all.

There really isn't a difference in the core battle system mechanics from the original NES games until 10.

12 is the first major departure, 13 was a variation of the previous core systems, 15 is the move to action oriented gameplay and 16 fully embraced action. Remake to me has a lot of similarities to 15.

I think 12 is the most unique of the games in away. Its pretty much an off-line MMO but none of the other mainline games play like it. If you including non-mainline games than its Tactics clearly.

Tactics
12
Remake

in order for me.

I feel like rating the progression/side systems is a more interesting conversation.

Currently, I wouldn't mind if Rebirth was the base combat system used for FF games going forward. Rebirth is smooth, looks beautiful, has depth and retains some of the staples old FF games had such as nerfs/buffs and other elements.

Turn based? FF XIII was amazing. If they ever made a turn based FF game again something like XIII would be fine. X was great as well. For me anything that has technical depth, looks great and has amazing summons is all I care about. I don't remember the fine details as it's been years since I played but I wouldn't mind a new one with a turn based system.

Rebirth also has that cinematic flourish to it without completely compromising the rpg mechanics
:ohhh:
It basically took the "cinematics" from summoning and made it seamless within the gameplay which is why I love it so much. Seeing all the shyt going on in battle with everything looking so smooth never ceased to impress me.
