In the Wu Tang we not only saw a group, but we saw a collective of artists who could be their own one man and put out solo work. We had Enter the Wu Tang in 93 and then after that for a few years we had other members putting out their own solo albums (classics too). Only Built for Cuban Linx, Ironman, Tical, Return to the 36 Chambers, and Liquid Swords. All the artists were able to go loose on their pwn solo careers but ultimately their success was working towards building the Wu Tang brand. Wu Tang gave the blueprint for what a lot of groups try to do today.
Of course we haven't gotten a group as extensive in talent as Wu Tang since and with a lot of groups it seems to be one or two guys out of the group who as a solo artist is relevant.
What other groups would you say were able to pull off these career moves and brand building like the Wu Tang has?
