I've been thinking the same thing. Them being lackeys for Aitch doesn't make sense.

It makes perfect sense. That's why they've been able to get away with so much shyt for the last nine months.
I don't think they implied that HHH was behind them all along though. He just recently changed his mind or whatever about what's "good for business".
Heyman admitted to hiring them for Punk though, so they are basically mercenaries, even though they've often acted on their own. Still, I like the idea of them being isolated and dealing out their own brand of justice, instead of acting as goons for someone else.

Wasn't it revealed earlier in the year that they were helping CM GAWD retain the title because Heyman was paying them? This happened during that whole Brad Maddox trying to be hired bullshyt. It's not really that surprising.

That's the thing, though: it's been established that The Shield's concept of "justice" is entirely dependent upon who is paying them at the time.
When Heyman paid them, it was, "It's unfair that Cena and Ryback keep getting title shots when they've already lost."
Now that HHH is paying them it's, "Daniel Bryan is not 'Face of the company' material, and it's unfair that he's taking it personally."
Of course, none of this explains why they were attacking random babyfaces, but I guess that could be because of their own agendas/it's not supposed to be good.
