My family is black. My mother went to a black(negro) high school/college during the late 1920's. Many of her teacher were blacks who stayed in Europe/Germany following WWI. They returned to the US when the Nazi party begin their rise. Some Germans came with them. Her teachers warned of a coming war and made fluency in German a requirement. My mother and a few of her brothers were able to speak German and at least 3 other languages. They didn't talk about it, but growing up the conversations would switch languages depending on what needed to be said.
