Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
Honestly, my current job as a college professor is the most freedom I've ever experienced at job. I love teaching and I love having my own schedule to do my research. The only down side is moving to this shytty little redneck town. Socializing with black folks and finding quality entertainment takes effort here.

Tell me about your path to that career.. I'd like to get into it

Cool! We need more color in the academy. It's too white, especially since the demographics of the student body are changing.

1. Get a Ph.D (or Ed.D)
2. While working on the degree, try to get some research and/teaching experience that can lead to publications. You want to try to get published at least once before you go on the market.
3. Be open to moving, especially if you want a tenure track job. They're competive.
4. Network. It's a small community so word of mouth and letters of recommendation help. I think professional conference are the best avenues for this but also those research gigs I mentioned before.
5. Be prepared to be rejected. It's really competitive so it's not a reflection of your worth. You just have to keep trying and keep taking advantage of different opportunities while waiting for the position.

I have a spreadsheet I created when I actually was searching for jobs, because it's such a long process. If you want more detailed advice, feel free to PM me.

Myself. fukk 12(1)!
My current job (systems architect). I like meeting with clients, listening to their needs and then designing a system that works for them.

Fantasy.
Lol this gonna sound corny but my first real job was working at walmart. I was 18 years old and obsessed with romance novels, walmart employees get a discount and i bought so many books. I couldnt wait ti go to work to see what new title they had. Everyone thought i was nuts but i was just happy to have money to feed my addiction. Now a days you couldnt pay me to go into walmart unless it was absolutly necessary. I hate that place.

Tutoring elementary school students (5th graders). I got to tutor them up until their freshman year in high school. It was cool to see them grow and change. And offer advice when they asked.

I'm not trying to be shady, but I really enjoy anonymity on here. If I say one thing out of wack in regards to politics, religion, sex, or drugs, all it would take would be a little digging to narrow down my identity.

You know only 3% of all tenure track faculty nation wide are black, so it would be really easy to find me once I dropped my school's name. Too easy. I'm the only black in my discipline within my school, which I've discussed a lot on here.

Oh don't worry, I know......I'm glad to see that there is some normal folks around these parts....Not too often do you see a College professor post on message boards like these....:handshake:
