I'm genuinely curious: how can you believe that life is pointless while arguing that there is a higher power?

We don't have to, some people are followers and want to be led. Those are the ones that need a purpose or want some inherent meaning in life. And, yes giving a person "purpose" does change things for his/her life. In most cases, it makes that person more productive to a society.
