it's simple. new york is a fast place, hint the phrase "in a new york minute". if you don't keep up with the grind, you'll get left behind=that's the "new york state of mind". you have people coming from abroad not knowing what the time is. everybody is basically concentrated on where they're going and what they're doing where you're best to just focus on your own.

what other city you know that you could be in the hood, like a Lower East Side look up and see something as great as the Empire State Building ?... so close yet so far.

The Lower East Side is about as hood as Amagansett these days.

New York fukkin' City
I think any city that's a major melting pot ... And NYC has been a major melting pot for well over a century now will breed interesting unique people.

I can only assume the same for L.A & London etc etc

Basically.

Any major city anywhere is gonna have a pulse like no other.

Not to be harsh but what the fukk does a dude who came up in Iowa have in common with a person from NY or LA or Chicago in terms of world experience, culture, day to day realities?

here's something funny i wanted to add speaking of the ny state of mind. the new york state of mind is for the most part around the nyc area which includes southwest connecticut, north jersey, westchester and etc. it works well when you're in nyc. when you're in somewhere like north jersey however, it doesn't mix. you can't have a "new york state of mind" mentality while living in north jersey. this is why north jersey gets a bad rep because it's actually a slow paced place.

new yorkers are just about as big of a$$holes as north jersey people EXCEPT that they have more of an excuse. the environment in nyc will pretty much make you an ADD personality where you have to think like that in order to survive. in jersey on the other hand, it'll just make you miserable because the environment is slow for the most part.

I gotta say...that state of mind trickles throughout the East Coast.

everyone from billy joel, nas, jay, the last poets (hip hop's architects), etc. refer to this 'NY state of mind' in their songs, but what is it exactly? what do they mean by that?

can any new yorkers elaborate on this? do new yorkers grow up differently and have a different mindset from everybody else around the america/the world?

I never understood the New York State of Mind (grew up in Delaware) until I drove up there one day. I was on Vessy street near the Towers & I was like :krs: I get it now.

You feel the hustle. Some records man.....when you go to where their from, you find all the nuances in the songs. How environment can influence writing. I remember one night driving up the FDR playing...

Like 2 in the morning, Blazed as hell.....Chrysler Building on the left, Empire State stickin out the sky, Queensbridge & the Williamsburg bridge on the right. Felt like Batman listening to that muthafukka. Hopped off the 42 street exit like :smugfavre:

Lots a people who don't give a fukk about nobody but they self. Projects wit BMWs pulling outta underground garages across the street. The ultimate lemon into lemonade place.

Seeing crack head zoned out aint a good look cause he waking past a Lamborghini. Ny breeds cut throats and gutter snipe. Which is some what worshipped in the hip hop community.

Lol at a place were you gotta think fast or potentially be robbed or murdered, is the place to be. I wouldn't move back to ny unless I was rich.

shyt is cool as fukk though don't get me wrong. But it's more utterly depressing aspects than it is acclaimed attractions.
