Do you mean a Top Level Domain (TLD)? Or maybe you just mean a simple one word domain thats easy to remember?
If you can get a domain like here.com or visit.com then it would be valuable from jump even if you didn't do anything with it. Domains are like the new real estate and those two are prime locations on the internet. As far as making a website around it, its about the same either way but marketing the site would be mad easier.
These days its so hard to get a good domain that isn't taken. To check you can type the domain you want into a site like godaddy.com and the site will automatically tell you if its available to be bought or it's already taken
