Trap is just a beat style these days. But it was just a style when Kanye was Rhyming over trap beats in 2007-2008. It was only a short few years when trap was trappers.

Trap is that baseline piano and 808 drums for the most part. Hell in the 2010s people made trap out of all kinds of melodies/pianos and posted on YouTube. Window xp startup up sound was turned into a trap beat, lol.

But the full definition was a couple years. Kanye was rapping over trap by 2007. It was/is just a beat style majority of the time trap existed in the music world.

What actual trap music is has grown to be more generalized over the years to the point where you got people who don’t even talk about trapping being considered trap music artist smh. White people been done co-opted the term to where if you Google trap music, EDM probably gonna pop up.

Trap music origins and sounds always been somewhat debatable. But for all intents and purposes, the trap music most people talking about is talking about trapping over southern style beats. Like literally talking about being in the trap, trap life, selling drugs. A distinction from regular gangster rap where the main focus may be on something else.
