Relatively speaking, many homogeneous countries' perceptions of outsiders are heavily influenced by the media/what they see on TV, and many internalize stereotypes both the "good" ones and the racist ones.
Add that to the fact that Japan and other Asian countries perpetuate colorism and virtually worship cacs(along with their perceived socio-economic status).
For example, you can get a feel for how J-hip hop artists, K-pop artists or any musicians in any genre for that matter over in those countries really view blacks in candid interviews or tv shows that they assume have only an Asian audience/viewership. Just because they tend to associate our 'blackness' with the concept of 'cool/hip/trendy' doesn't mean many of them don't think of us, collectively, as inferior socially, culturally and from a physical attraction standpoint - compared to how they perceive whites, themselves and other Asians.
With that said, public opinions vary based on age demographic so like many countries in this day and age - the younger generations are more tolerant and more accepting of outside groups and cultures. Nonetheless, the European aesthetic standard will always be >>>> Afro-centric aesthetic standard in their eyes and if they do decide to go against the norm of dating someone of their own ethnicity(or race) they tend to prefer whites over blacks (and over any other foreign group for that matter). Check the interracial marriage stats. Peep how white+asian haafu models are idolized for their beauty and "fair" skin vs. asian+black haafu models over in Japan. There's a reason why bb cream and circle lenses are huge in the cosmetics industry over in places like Japan and South Korea.
So don't let a few isolated, personal experiences from some military brothas stationed over there warp your mind...
