Greed, fans, my opinion when the shiny suit era came in. It just got more commercialized, watered down and worse since then :manny:

Mainstream hip hop relied way too heavily on defjam. It was like the moment jay dissolved it or botched his duties as head it all fell apart.Thats one way to look at it another way to look at it was maybe it just plateaued :manny:

Everything has been done and said, it had its acceptance and wasnt the "rebel" music white kids once listened to cuz their parents said they couldn't = lost its cool :ld: So with that acceptance the edge was taken off to make it commercial like pop = artform is lost, but hey at least the artist is getting paid right?

Sampling hands down..

When budgets decreased, producers got exposed. The South had a sound to fall back on. The East Coast didnt.

Go down the list and of top rappers and producers and youll see. Only a handful of NY artists can get the money to use samples. The rest died off. Look at Redman. His go to Erick Sermon is pretty awful without samples. Look at Meth? Every big hip hop record from NY from the 70's on was a sample..

Now they cant get a hit for shyt really.. same for the West in some ways

Lyricism by the Southern dudes is a close second.

Copycat trends is third in my book...

I hate when people blame the Internet for what's wrong with hip hop. I definently think its not dead because even with the low sales hip hop is still very much a part of pop culture. But the fans don't wanna support the artist, it's as simple as that. nikkas say the its easy to download albums which is very true but it's also just as easy for fans of other genres to download music as well but they still go show support. I will never understand up and coming artist not supporting artist either, do nikkas not know that the more that hip hop music sells the more that labels will be willing to sign new artist. And to the fans who want more substance or quality the more you buy of your favorite artist the more demand not only them but the type of music they make will be in demand.

the hustler mentality.

since pac there's been a bigger emphasis on money making gimmicks then focusing on artistry. Kanye did his part to turn that but most of the ''artistry'' is merely pretentious, posturing & empty.

nikkas that take these stories the wrong way. rappers that don't write their lyrics. people who don't understand what the product is meant to be; not a hot album, but a change in you and how you interact with your environment (activism/wisdom/blah).
