What makes 12 years a slave so hard to watch opposed to other movies about slaves?

I feel like I should watch it for its historical significance but all these movies end up making me feel is depressed or mad at white people. My question is though what were the hardest scenes in this movie and how bad does it get

The history conjures emotions and watching people tortured/brutalized/humiliated is never enjoyable to people that still have humanity inside of them. Especially if its telling your history with another group of people.

And this is also based off a true story of the actual events from that guy's perspective.

Not that things didnt happen in any other film about slaves...but it made this one all the more visceral
