assuming cuz you get roughly 100 possessions per game and its so fast paced im sure most are "freestyled" by the players and "on-the-fly". obviously plays out of timeouts and most plays down the stretch in a close game are gonna be "designed" but can one of you ballers who's played in a structured environment break down approximately how often a "designed" play was ran? also am i wrong for thinking that the higher you go on the food chain (high school to college to pro) that less plays are actually "designed" and player athleticism and smarts take over :ld:

I haven't played in a structured environment but in terms of number of plays ran in large part it depends on the coach and how long he's been with the team. I know coaches like Jerry Sloan and Avery Johnson were huge micromanagers who wanted almost every halfcourt possession running plays they called. Teams like the Lakers hardly called any plays as the triangle was based on position on the floor and which pass was made.

I think some coaches like Popovich started off running lots of teams but with as long as he's been with the Spurs they get to know where each other will be and probably aren't as strict on running certain plays all the time.

Generally speaking, after a basket is made is when you're most likely to see a set play (excluding dead ball situations).

I actually think plays are ran all the time but players break away from it. Supposed to read what the defense gives you, reacting...especially for motion type offenses:yeshrug:

I would guess that most teams run some kind of motion set or 2 man set and run options off of that....
Set plays are usually ran when u need a bucket in a particular moment in the game, like to stop a run, or coming out of a timeout.
