If you can, get a crib near a grocery store

know a neighbor or two, you ain't gotta know the whole building, but it helps

depending on the apartment, get you a strap, nothing big or fancy, just basic protection if you feel the need to

go for mom and pop owned buildings first, with Covid they cutting deals with tenants to fill them up

get you a nice rug, a lamp, and some decorations for your wall.

Visit the place at night to see if there's any shenanigans going on.

Make sure water and pest control is included.

Make sure the Ac works:damn: my first apartment I was hot as hell in the summer and cold as hell in the winter, horrible.

When you move in clean the carpet yourself again just in case they didnt :hubie:

Some ppl might try to say not to get one on the ground floor because they are the ones that get robbed, but I say get a ground floor to avoid smokers living below you. Had a fakkit ass cave bytch smoker smoke outside during the summer/fall when we wanted to open our patio door, and inside during the winter. Asked management to do something about it and got hit with the :yeshrug:.

You might get lucky and never have to deal with it, but you never know.

Look for SAFETY!

how many exits in and out, basement door, roof access, do you have to get buzzed to get in, “teens” hanging on the block?

see how soundproof the apt is during the day and night if possible.

parking?

see if the landlord does repairs himself or has a property manager. Self repairs are going to take longer depending how many units the dude owns.

Washing machine in the apartment, no loud neighbors, no neighbors that cook really smelly food, no small children next door, able to control the temperature in your own apartment (surprisingly not all apartments allow this), fast internet options, close to work and a grocery store, not next to a busy street/highway, assigned parking spaces, newer appliances (fridge, etc).

Heres a nice list:

get a place with great parking situation and offers more than enough close guest parking. You never know when you have a friend come over, or a chick come through. The last thing you want to do is make it hard for others to enjoy life with you, and have you rushing home after work to grab a parking spot.

Top floor. Personally I love cracking my windows and balcony doors and saving money on AC/Heat.

Decent walls, you want to be able to be confident in your privacy

Elevators can be cool if you value conveinence. I like stairs too though, no random weird elevator small talk.

Live in a semi-walkable area. Whether that near some restaurants, grocery stores, small bars.

Upgraded appliances if you can, it will save you money every month.

  • Washer/Dryer in the actual unit.
  • Water/trash/etc included in the rent.
  • What the area is like at night, esp. on the weekends.
  • The latest date for rent payment before it's 'late' (mine is the 5th, I know friends that have to have theirs on the 1st and that's it lol)
  • Parking - if it's gated/enclosed, assigned spots (that's always the best), guest parking
  • If you can install a smart thermostat, will def save you money. An older place might not be compatible.
  • How close the nearest grocery is, and gas station. For those times when you're too lazy to get gas at night and NEED to go in the morning so it's best if it's close by.
