What the hell is up with this recent trend of advertising the director’s name in a movie title/promotion?

Robert Eggers
James Gunn
Matt Reeves

Like this shyt is supposed to mean something.

I don’t remember them promoting “Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York”. It was just Gangs of New York.

This shyt is just goofy.

If you’re a good director/writer the shyt speaks for itself.

Ehhh, I don't think it's that recent. Every Nolan film post the Batman trilogy has been like that. shyt, were in an age where popular directors are cited in ads just for executive producing movies.

Directors mean more to push films than many actors do these days. I’ve noticed that trend since at least 2018.
The only director right now that moves the needle for me is Denis Villeneuve.

At least that I can name off the top of my head. That dude’s catalog is ridiculous. And I don’t even mean Dune.

Incendies
Prisoners
Sicario
Bladerunner 2049
Arrival

Villeneuve’s movies are way more entertaining and varied than Scorsese, whose best movies are all just crime related. Or Tarantino, whose movies are peppered with interesting dialogue, racist slurs, and always end with an explosion of violence.

So many acclaimed directors all have a template that gets boring.

All of these trailers cite the director before any of the stars and, in most cases, before even the name of the movie :dead:

This isn't across the board, obviously. But I do think "superstar" directors have always been a selling point and are now even more of a selling point as the age of bonafide superstar actors that can sell films off their name has died pretty much.

Yeah @obarth but they’re not marketed with the director name.

Like you see James Gunn’s Superman
You see Robert Eggers’ The Northman.

Nobody was fukkin saying Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood

Well to get to your point, the biggest most successful and popular movies that are associated with Scorsese are crime movies.

Nobody gives a shyt about After Hours. Or Hugo. Or Silence. Or Shutter Island.

And while I love The Color of Money, Scorsese is on record having said he didn’t even wanna make that movie. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even like it.

But whatever. I stand by my point.

Yeah, directors and to some extent, even writers now are getting more clout for media than actors are. It has been a trend for at least 10+ years now tho. It seems that people are starting to either find out or perceive that even the greatest actor is only as good as how the role is written/written for them and who's directing them.

Superstar actors are starting to die out. Somewhat even literally as well, since the top tier actors are aging out, doing less work in some cases, retiring, etc and there haven't been too many replacement superstar level actors to come up in their stead (this is even doubly so for action star actors and triply so for martial arts actors, as they seem to be very much dying breed now; like where are the new Tony Jaa's/Jet-li's/Donnie Yen's and there's never been an icon on the level of Swarzneggar and Stallone since. At best, maybe The Rock could count and Jason Statam or Keanu Reeves' John Wick, but still, not quite the same and even all of these are starting to age out and whatnot). Just a few here and there have that high level star power. And even still, the aforementioned role/directors are often needed for them to truly shine. In this note...it's not quite WATTBA anymore.
