Frankenstein 1910 is considered the first feature film horror movie but I'm certain every answer in this thread is wrong. (with mine being the closest probably)

The real version of the story, she was to be beheaded. The executioner was so nervous that when he swung, he chopped of a piece of her head instead of her neck
The angry mod/crowd that came to watch her get killed was then in horror as the queen who was still alive says "Finish the job" which sounds gangsta but she was probably more like "Please kill me". That part isn't seen in the "movie" because they wasn't goin that hard back then

It wasn't Mélies' first film but it was the first that audiences were largely freighted by, hence its common reference as the first horror film.

Frankenstein was also a short film, 16 minutes long.
