For me, as I got older, I began to appreciate lyricism more.

Like I had Biggie albums growing up, Nas, DMX, etc

But I moreso just listened just to be listening. I had just gotten my first car, so I'd pop the CD in and just ride, not really paying attention.....(kinda like the young dudes now with the mumble rappers). The commercial records stood out, or the ones with the best beats knocked, but I wasn't really processing the rhyme schemes, wordplay on a 100% level.

But I think, as you get older, you naturally pay more attention to what you're listening to. And if it's good, it'll last over time and you can appreciate it.

So I didn't really start appreciating true lyricism from Jay, Nas, Biggie, DMX, Pun, etc til I grew up. Then I was like "yoooooo.....:ohhh:"

BUT at that point, I could go BACK and listen b/c I already owned those albums and liked those artists.

If you're a youngster rt now and a fan of mumble rap, when you get older, what are you going back to appreciate? Or what happens when the sound changes? Will you just stop being a fan of rap?

No shots:hubie:

Just curious...???

I've always appreciated lyricism but I appreciate the more melodic elements some mumble rappers bring. I'm 33 btw so I'm not really young

they're gonna appreciate whatever the hell the listened to...its called nostalgia

first album i ever copped was Silkk the Shocker, Charge it 2 da game

i didnt get older and go "this nikka couldnt stay on beat, this is trash"

i bump that shyt cleaning the house

listening to and appreciating Silkk, Three 6 Mafia, Lil Jon doesnt mean i cant listen to/appreciate Jigga, The Lox, or Nas

why do we get older and act like the kids arent having the same experience we had?...this is the shyt to them now, it will be the shyt to them later..its what they're growing up on...and there is so much variety/access out here...they arent bound to one genre or subgenre for that matter.

we really act like there wasnt shyt we liked that oldheads told us was trash

you know how much grief i caught from my uncles for listening to a nikka that bark and growl like a dog on records?

they gonna start listening to the older hiphop and listen to lyricism like they discovered something new and its gonna become trendy to be a hipster that listens to "retro" hiphop

nah its the opposite, i liked more lyrical rap when I was younger, i was young so nursery rhymes were more appealing. I dont give a fukk what a rapper has to say these days, most these rappers are younger and more ignorant than me, the fukk i care what they have to say.

They'll stop listening to rap and go into pop, emo or whatever it is they really care for

As I get older, I pay much more attention to atmosphere and nuances in the beat/vocals than the rhymes. Lyricism is for teens, to be honest. I remember caring about bars and internal rhymes in high school when your level of intellect matches the rappers. But as I'm older and have more education than a lot of rappers, even the goats, I can see that it's not so much about 'lyricism' but the poetic value of everything. The images and personality that the beat inspires, the charisma/imagination of the voice and flow, and how their rhymes add to everything.
