Not a psychology fan but i found this study by Heriot-Watt University which claims that there's a correlation between your music taste and your personality :ohhh:

'To break it down, here is the connection they have found:

  • Blues fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing, gentle and at ease
  • Jazz fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing and at ease
  • Classical music fans have high self-esteem, are creative, introvert and at ease
  • Rap fans have high self-esteem and are outgoing
  • Opera fans have high self-esteem, are creative and gentle
  • Country and western fans are hardworking and outgoing
  • Reggae fans have high self-esteem, are creative, not hardworking, outgoing, gentle and at ease
  • Dance fans are creative and outgoing but not gentle
  • Indie fans have low self-esteem, are creative, not hard working, and not gentle
  • Bollywood fans are creative and outgoing
  • Rock/heavy metal fans have low self-esteem, are creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, and at ease
  • Chart pop fans have high self-esteem, are hardworking, outgoing and gentle, but are not creative and not at ease
  • Soul fans have high self-esteem, are creative, outgoing, gentle, and at ease'

No striking negative traits found in fans of 'black music' (36,000 ppl and 60 countries). Do you agree with the results? :lupe:

So how does this make sense if your fan of, oh say Metal and Rap?
Both contradict themselves by this study.

Im not saying i disagree, but how does it account for variances like that?

If you're fan of rap/metal you're a depressed rapist with anger issues. Word to limp bizkit.

i considered this as well. psychological research is rarely clear cut but im guessing the music genre you gravitate to more reflects your personality

I don't agree with this, I think you have to be specific about artists too. Hip Hop is so diverse, it's gonna be different depending on who you listen to, there's psychology that will have truths to it regarding who people listen to though, you can tell about someone from who they listen too. Would be an interesting thread topic 1 day.

Something like, what does the music you listen to say about you?...

i personally think music can and can't tell us about a person's characteristics. sure, someones favorite artists may reflect on a person but what of the people who listen to music the complete opposite of themselves? they can't be anomalies cus a a lot of us do it and that debunks that hypothesis. i basically think we seek music that reflects us e.g. if you into that conspiracy theory/secret government agenda type shyt you will gravitate towards immortal tech BUT u can also seek the complete opposite to feed the ego

See that's what making me wonder cause you cant have a straight up clear cut answer unless the question is directly driven towards a specific answer. This isn't like diagnosing someone with Bi-Polar disorder or Schizophrenia. But i do think you have a point though with what your gravitate towards, but then again. Example, you may be an introvert one year, then you end up at a new job and change to extrovert because of it. I think there is too many variables for this to be a valid study.

exactly, there's too many variables in this bytch. socio-economic factors, brain chemistry and the like BUT if a person changes from an introvert to an extrovert wouldn't the person's music taste change with his new personality? so his music taste would at least give some indication of his personality or do you still think the study has absolutely no validity:dwillhuh:

I think there is some truth, but not a clear cut truth as the study wants you believe. I took a psychology of personality class this last semester and in order for someone to be "diagnosed" with a disorder, they have to meet the criteria, BUT here is where the issue gets cloudy/muddy. Say someone is feeling suicidal and hasnt been eating, are they truly "depressed" or is this just a reaction to them taking medicine? things like this show there is too many variables when it comes to things like this.

We want that exact truth, but sometimes it isnt easy. There are some traits that will absolutely stick with you until the day you die, but say your neighbor with those exact traits, may have had them as a kid, but not anymore as a adult.

As far as the music taste changing from a introvert and extrovert, it may change or it may not. the only reason why im bringing this up, is because im becoming a more extroverted person and its reflecting on the Big 5 Personality tests. But has music taste changed for me? Kinda, but i still listen to rap more then anything else. Am i the only to have this answer? no cause there may be people who fit these categories specifically.
