I can see this guy has a ton of fans, but listening to his music has me wondering what's really so great about him. I listened to GKMC front to back and liked: good kid, swimming pools, compton, and the recipe. He tells some interesting stories but I don't see how he's super lyrical like so many of you do, and a lot of the stuff I listened to has no replay value for me because once I've heard the story I don't really want to hear it again anytime soon. When I go back and listen to "money trees" which as a whole song I don't really like, I'm more impressed with this guy jay rock(a good example of what I consider lyrical) than I am Kendrick. I know it's a preference but his raspy voice is annoying and he sounds like he records a lot of his material while taking a shyt, like on his control verse for example. He also seems like he specifically tries to appeal to females with most of his songs and overall he seems over-hyped like the game was when he came out before everybody realized he sucks. What am I missing? Put me up on his best material so I can understand why he's so highly regarded.

Agree about The Game... even I got caught up in the hype back then...

Didn't realize he was garbage until his second album dropped...

GKMC was a solid debut but it's not even close to his best work. A lot of fans have only heard that one album so because it's their introduction to him they tend to overrate it.. anyone who's familiar with his early work knows he's capable of dropping better material.

Give Section 80 a listen.. If you don't recognize his talent after that then he's not for you and you should stick to listening to whatever generic flavor of the week rapper it is that you listen to.

I thought he was overrated but I lsitened to gkmc last week and holy shyt, best album I have heard since food and liquor in 2006.
Dude can say A LOT with very few words, the complexity of his flow is fantastic and his imagery is out of this world.

so yeah, I jumped on the bandwagon and I also consider him as the best right now.

S80 isn't too far from gkmc, but it's just not on the same level.

I'd say that gkmc is a solid 9 to 9.5/10 ( and I rarely give such as high score to an album) and section is a solid 7.5 to 8

if you don't like gkmc then he is just not for you, gkmc still a modern day classic though.
maybe you'll enjoy section 80 even though gkmc is way better.

For starters I see you haven't mentioned 1 kendrick lamar song that's not on GKMC

Try listening to his other stuff and u might see why people like him so much instead of basing your opinion on his lyrics from an album where he was telling a story and not trying to slaughter every beat. I think his next album will be much more lyrical depending on the direction he takes

Knew he was dope the second I heard this

How do you listen to that and NOT feel incredibly impressed with his ability to put together words? He not the lyrical miracle multi syllable type of dude, but his style is still dope.

yeah tbh gkmc is really the only album that blew my mind these last years.

I'm getting old but thanks to kednrick, I just see lyricism completely different than I did before. Stuff like Diabolic and other punchline rappers has a lot of multis which is really cool but it's also really easy to do and not that impressive to me anymore. On the other hand, stuff like Kendrick just has incredible depth to it and he manages to say so much with less words. His imagery is fantastic and he really does paint a picture lyrically and put you into the song with his descriptions. Gkmc made me enjoy hip hop again.
If I want something more lyrical, I listen to section, if I want to listen to an amazing concept album, I listen to gkmc.
with that said, gkmc > s80.
