i don't see the mass appeal either but i know if i start up season 2(I watched most of season 1) I know i'll be hooked, doing myself the favor
To me its the dynamic of the group just trying to survive amidst the Apocalypse. There's no cure or safe haven and dealing with the human issues that are still around even though its the end

The show definitely hasn't been perfect....it only gets worse in Season 2 imo....season 3 really picks up though.

i cant really explain it, i have always like zombie movies and playing L4D and RE.
i will say that it's like a horror movie and action movie every week. so in terms of simply delivering thrills, it pays off.
however, if they dont discover something that adds a reason for hope, this show may fall off. i think much of the audience will develop crisis fatigue and get tired of watching people struggle to survive when there is never shown to be any point to surviving.

Basically, season 1 was amazing. After that, it's been kinda boring tho. Like other dude said, it seems like they're just kinda going from place-to-place, looking for their next meal. Not much point to surviving.
