Nobody knows for sure. Some of the speculation/rumors going around is that maybe he thought Drake was taking too long making his OVO label official, that he didn't trust , or that he thought he was going to be bigger than Drake so he didn't want to sign under him.

That bama Drake was playing some wicked games and didn't wanna take care of the label side of things. He was trying to practice YCMB's motto of not paying royalties to artists and making music should be based on crew love. Theweeknd wasn't having that so that's where they're at now. The weeknd is better off coming down from drakes' shadow and sign somewhere else. It's only Thursday and the biggest headline of the day so far is Drake's average new song "5am in toronto"...Ppl are gonna be talking about that mediocre verse throughout the morning. Anyways I hope they resolve that ish soon cuz I'm trying to get high while listening to a new theweeknd album be for this summer:

The only clear links are articles about him signing a distribution deal with Universal Republic or him refusing to sign to Drake's label or YMCMB.

What's interesting is that Universal Republic distributes all YMCMB records, which basically means he cut Baby, Wayne, and Drake out as middle men and went straight to the bosses. With this "no new nikkas" shyt and Drake ignoring anything XO it's show they might have beef. But it's never been confirmed, I think Weeknd just didn't want to do business with .
