Whats the beef with common core and why do teachers complain at every accountability measure?

The common core way of teaching these kids is fukking retarded.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and some of the shyt she comes home with for HW boggles my fukking mind brehs. :mindblown:

Math especially....they got these kids drawing 10 groups of 7 cookies to figure out what 10 X 7 is, as opposed to just learning times tables like the rest of us grew up doing.

shyt is all a ruse made to get the kids trained to pass the standardized tests.

The actual method that they are using to learn is convoluted and fukking ridiculous.

memorization doesn't work for everyone because they can't abstractly visualize what 10x7 actually represents.

They said they didn't like the rigidity of "past" standards, yet when new attempts are made, they shoot THOSE down too :snoop:

Common core actually requires short term memorization just as much as non-common core math.

An example is adding 49 and 38. The old-fashioned way to approach this is to add 9 + 8. You bring down the 7 and carry the 1 over to the next column. You have to memorize that. Then you add 4 and 3 and the 1. The common core version tells you to break it up into manageable pieces, but you need to memorize what you are breaking up. So, common core tells you to break down one of these components into an easier version. If you look at the 49, that would be easier to work with if it was 50. So, you subtract one from 38 to get 37. Now, you add 50 and 37. You can't forget that you subtracted 1 from the 38 or your answer is fubar'ed. Or you could substract 2 from 49 to get 47, but you add the 2 to the 38 to get 40. 40 + 47 is easier.

It's a screwed up concept, even though it works. Kids can figure out complex problems, but end up taking as long or even longer to figure out easier problems, because they are trying to break up easy numbers. Example, 40 + 50 is 90. A common core though process would take 5 away from 50 so you end up adding 45 + 45 to get 90. They actually added steps.

is it about "adding steps" or simplifying the thought process?

Because sometimes tricks help on the fly.

Again, I don't see the problem here...does it help kids?

i think the problem most teachers have with testing, outside of the risk that you are only teaching to the test and not to genuine knowledge, is that teachers cant control the quality of student they receive. if they receive a 7th grader with a 3rd grade intellect, the teacher will be unfairly judged for the predictably poor performance of the student, even if that teacher manages to get that child up from 3rd to maybe 5th grade in reading, writing, and math but cant bring that child all the way up to their actual grade level which is 7th within the span of one school year. this actually punishes the teachers who take on the toughest teaching assignments.

it is if kids are visual.

the point is to introduce a new medium of understanding.

Just moving numbers around doesn't "click" as well you you think it does for young kids.
