What's the consensus on how to deal with s/o's parents?

Imagine you're getting to know your s/o and his/her family, still trying to establish that relationship. But you can tell there are times when the parents are really testing you or getting on your nerves.

Do you sort of defer and go with the bullshyt they are spewing because you were taught to respect your elders, or do you establish boundaries early that you are not going to bow down to them just because they are someone's parents?

the less contact i have with them the better, but if i have to talk to them, i just act respectful and talk back to them civilized cause i dont want to hear it from my wife either, but outside of that, fukk em. I know they hate me and the dislike is mutual
