Obviously things have changed from just getting buzz though 5 mics in the Source. Not to say mags don't play a part anymore (XXL mag. freshman class still has some cred). But now it's just mainly the internet. What do you think the keys are for artists to build a movement, buzz over the internet. What gets your attention? Is it a cosign from some of your favorite artists on twitter? Youtube review sites? Online magazine (i.e Okayplayer for those who are into that type of rap). Is it getting a bunch of youtube hits? Instagram, Vine? What's the keys?

having a familiar brand and having a personal connection with your demographic. fill a niche and then tell everybody "hey, look at how well i do this". i would say networking is the key.

it's easier than ever now.. all they have to do is just put the music out on the internet and the buzz will build itself. with all of outlets on the internet it almost doesn't even take any real effort to build a buzz

thats why so many rappers are struggling to be heard.

not really, they key is just keepin' that buzz once you got it.

one of the major changes is how the songs don't stick as long as they use too. even the really great ones of today don't stick like they did 10 plus years ago. back in the day a rapper could put out a song and hold down a whole season just about but now it's like if they ain't got somethin' else comin' out in a month for the radio, it's "one to the next one". there's so many rappers today and people's attention spans ain't even in tuned with keepin' up with who's who when there's so much music out there. so a rapper or mc has to work twice as hard to keep those songs comin' like clock work. one of those reasons is cause of the internet and the access to so much music

think about. so many many rappers good and bad have come and gone in the last few years. we've had rappers like kreayshawn come and go with the quickness. i remember she even found her way on tv on carson daly's late night show and i never thought she would've made it passed the internet blogs. but she had built a buzz up enough to get her name out there that she was even able to get on tv and get a deal. soulja boy was the poster boy for that shyt. he might be a one hit wonder but at the start of his career he built his buzz off of youtube and doin' his own shyt. it's work in keepin' that wheel rollin' but if a rapper or mc got that ambition or drive it can be done so long as they motivated and got the talent to make songs that catch on

what an artist does with that buzz when they get it is all on them and the choices they make.

The first song was a mega hit, but the others I named were all Top 40 status. "Turn My Swag On" was #3 and all songs went plat.

twitter is great for creating buzz for just about any brand. follow people. retweet them. have them retweet you. and your reach will expand. people will see what others retweet, they'll check you out, and that's how it starts. i used to hate on twitter, but that shyt is golden for gaining buzz.

i guess but when it think soulja boy i think superman and that's it. everythin' that followed that song did just that, followed. didn't over shadow it nor were the other songs just as big. but that's just my opinion

Because he never reached the climax of his first hit song (which no artist does btw) or because you may 'think' something, doesn't deny the reality that Soulja Boy is not a one hit wonder as per your original statement. When a song tops the BillBoards charts and achieves platinum status, it is an undeniable hit and Soulja did that multiple times in his career.
