Whats the point of MLB having a trade deadline when trades still can take place afterwards

Justin Moreneau from the Twins was recently traded to the Pirates, I could have sworn the trade deadline was in July. I swear I just shake my head and the rules and things like that of the MLB

it's a waiver deadline.

It's supposed to be much tougher to make deals because anyone can block them. You can technically trade all year around, but the 8/31 deadline is more for playoff eligibility.
