I being seeing people post he only a mixtape rapper like it a bad thing. I really can't think of any cons of being a mixtape rapper. Most mixtape rapper come from the streets so dropping a couple hot tapes and doing shows is actually making a good living. All mixtapes rappers aint geting millions but a couple made mills but 10 thousand a show you can live good off that.

10 thousand a show? To profit that if tickets sell for 20 bucks you gotta have around a thousand people show up (profit half, other half goes to opening acts, set up, promo, etc.). How many mixtape rappers can get even close to a thousand people to a show in more than their home town?

Rhq
Migos
Waka
Yo gotti plus many more is getting at least 10 bands a show

Yo Gotti is not a mixtape rapper neither is Waka. The both got 2+ mainstream albums.

Migos is 3 dudes splitting 10k or whatever not to mention all the other business expenses.

RHQ might be the only good example but do people check for him because of his mixtapes or cuz he got a song on a radio; in other words, when the song stop playing will people be checking?

The mentalitly.

Being a mixtape rapper you have to accept the fact that you're never really going to be as desirable as someone who is more popular than you despite potentially making much better material than them. Accepting that and playing your position will be harder than you think.

thats only tix tho, if they perform in a strip club (which most mixtape rappers do). 10k can be made back off of drinks alone.

Pros -

Great start to get your music out there
Great way to polish your craft, especially those that produce their own beats, and engineer their own music
Easier and Cheaper than making a full album
As long as the mixtape is non-profitable, you don't have to worry about sample clearance
More creative space
Mixtape covers

Cons -
Sometimes posting your mixtape of mixtape sites (like Datpiff) can do more harm than good. For example, unless you're already a established artist with a following, posting your mixtape of that site will more be promoting the site rather than promoting your own music. The best way to do it is to develop your own website and post them there. That way every thing they see on that site is nothing but you and not other artist. Basic case of Branding brehs

Artist can sometimes get lazy with just making a bunch mixtapes, which could water down the quality of their music. People appreciate originality, making a Cd with a bunch of Pro Tool sessions isn't good for your image. Especially when you're using other artist's productions and beats.
