When did Jay Z become a legacy artist? And how did Beyonce escape legacy artdom?

“4.44 was the song I always wanted to make, but didn’t want to be that vulnerable. It didn’t fit the metrics of what I wanted - chasing billboard. When you let go of that you can be a true artist.” - Spoken Word Hov

An album sounding like this would be interesting.

some artists legacy is set in stone. they don't need to link up with younger producer and put out 8 albums in 5 years and have a feature on an album every month

Of course not. When you've done stuff like that your entire career, what else is there to do besides embrace being a legacy artist?

Even though he was pump faking, he could have very well retired right then for real and still be Jay-Z legacy wise. Everything after that is icing on the cake.
other than American Gangster and parts of WTT, it was more like doodoo on the cake

I disagree, I have enjoyed Jay's material over this last part of his career.

Then again I don't measure his output against his legacy.

I haven't enjoyed the majority of Nas' hitboy run but it changes nothing about what he means to me or the culture.

Iono

But he got an insane bump back in 2009 from all the hipsters claiming he was the GOAT. That lasted up until 2013 and peaked with WTT
