When does it makes sense for Married people to file separately?

What is the benefit of filing separately, other than if your spouse has shaky financial/IRS history?

I'm trying to maximize our tax return, but I'm not sure under what circumstances filing separately would be best.

hardly ever but sometimes it may be beneficial when one of you has a lot of itemized deductions and the other does not
